Today, Olivier MAES, COO of Prom\u00e9th\u00e9e Earth Intelligence, explains this essential technology.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bef0b54 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"bef0b54\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is a payload and how does it work?&nbsp;<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3a9197 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d3a9197\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The payload, as its name suggests, is the part of a satellite that performs a specific function essential to the success of its mission. Our English-speaking counterparts are even more explicit, translating &#8220;charge utile&#8221; as &#8220;Payload,&#8221; literally &#8220;the load that pays.&#8221; Simply put, the payload is the operational heart of a satellite, enabling it to accomplish its mission.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In opposition to the payload, we find what we call &#8220;the bus&#8221; or &#8220;the platform.&#8221; The bus or platform is responsible for providing the resources needed for the payload to function properly, including energy.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he sensors and actuators used to position the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ellite<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and communication with Earth.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the specific case of the ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e satellite, its payload takes the form of an imager, a camera capable of capturing high-resolution images of the Earth from orbit.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c4aaa8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3c4aaa8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><b>Speaking of embedded systems, what can we expect from ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e?<\/b><span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d9ddc2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d9ddc2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e is a 16U nanosatellite. This means that it takes the form of a cube measuring 20 cm x 20 cm x 40 cm, and uses a technology <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> &#8220;Flight proven&#8221;, already tried and tested in space.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The key characteristics of this Earth observation mission require ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e to be stable, agile and autonomous. Stability is essential for capturing sharp images, just as a photographer avoids fidgeting when shooting. Agility is needed so that the satellite can point its camera in different directions, and not just to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">trace only<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> under him. Autonomy allows operations to be programmed in advance, while remaining flexible to meet customer needs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-88efa9c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"88efa9c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is the purpose of ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e's on-board payload? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6f691df elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6f691df\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The satellite <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">embarks <\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">two payloads. The first is a multispectral optical camera capable of capturing images with 1.5-meter resolution in seven different spectral bands. This main payload is at the heart of ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e&#8217;s mission. At the same time, a secondary payload in the form of a communications beacon will serve as a demonstrator, establishing communications with satellites. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the constellation <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kineis. This demonstration paves the way for future technologies to be integrated into the Japetus demonstrator.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-38def8b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"38def8b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What communication system will ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e use? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-15989f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"15989f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e will use various communication systems to carry out its missions. The &#8220;S-band transponders&#8221; will be used to control and monitor the satellite from Earth. A second link will be dedicated to sending &#8220;image telemetry&#8221;, i.e. images acquired by the camera and stored on board. This link will operate in X-band, a centimetric wavelength that enables<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to obtain higher data<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e data flows<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and therefore transmit image volumes in excess of one gigabyte.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">its<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In addition, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the <\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">The beacon demonstrator will enable ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e to communicate with the Kineis constellation, sending data in small packets of 100 bits, equivalent to 12.5 bytes. This experimental approach opens the door to new applications.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\"> leading to<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">high reactivity<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">using satellites deployed as part of the Kin\u00e9is IoT constellation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On Japetus, we&#8217;ll also have on-board intelligence to analyze images.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Bringing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">this analysis capability<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> d&#8217;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">image analysis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> closer to the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is a real game changer <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for satellite earth observation <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">satellite observation, opening up new applications<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and dimi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the volume of data to be downloaded.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19dc483 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"19dc483\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Looking beyond ProtoM\u00e9th\u00e9e, what innovations are on the horizon? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2d52906 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2d52906\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The next chapter is called Japetus. This satellite, developed as part of the CNES\/DGE\/Next generation EU relaunch plan, will be able to carry larger payloads. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">large<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">offering enhanced image resolution<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> superior image quality, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it will also carry <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a beacon for inter-satellite communication, integrated artificial intelligence <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and will be controlled from the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ol <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">via a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ground segment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> highly automated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to process all the satellites<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of the constellation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The contract for the Japetus demonstrator has already been <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">started <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with Hemeria, for a launch date in 2025.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Once the JAPETUS constellation is deployed, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">PROM\u00c9TH\u00c9E Earth Intelligence will become the first European operator capable of delivering data and services combining near-real time and hyper-reactivity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559740\":259}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">By 2026, we&#8217;ll have a sovereign earth observation infrastructure.
